Explore: Peru

In Peru, every day is an adventure – where else can you hike to Machu Picchu, spy the Nazca Lines from a hot air balloon, learn about lost tribes, cruise through wildlife-rich wetlands… all in the space of a fortnight?

Holidays to Peru

Peru’s cities are equally impressive too. They vary from European-style Cusco, where pretty squares, elaborate cathedrals and colourful markets are the big draws, to coastal capital Lima, with its trendy beach-side cafes and super-cool surf scene.

Where to go

No trip to Peru is complete without visiting Machu Picchu. Chances are, you’ll start in the high-altitude city of Cusco, the gateway to this World Wonder – which is actually very impressive in its own right. It’s a fine spot to adjust to high altitude: highlights include strolling around the Plaza de Armas, visiting the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, and haggling for treasures in the vast market.

When you’re ready to embark on your journey to the Lost City of the Incas, you can do so via the four-day Inca Trail, or by taking the train from Ollantaytambo. Southeast of Cusco you’ll find Lake Titicaca – the largest in South America. Straddling the country’s border with Bolivia, it’s an unforgettable location for cruises, with its mountainous backdrop and floating reed islands.  Also, don’t miss the mysterious Nazca Lines; these ancient animal-shaped geoglyphs and patterns are best seen from above.

When to go

For visiting Machu Picchu, winter (May to September) is the driest season to undertake the hike or explore Peru’s cities and rainforest. July and August are peak times, so Inca Trail permits will need to be booked at least six months in advance. You can expect warmer weather, but more rain, in the summer months (December to March).
