Explore: Ecuador

Ecuador may be small, but it’s bursting with raw and ravishing natural beauty: from the Amazon jungle and the wildlife-rich Galapagos Islands, to the sky-scraping peaks of the Andean highlands.

Holidays to Ecuador

Here you can seek out pink dolphins, hummingbirds, golden-headed quetzals and sea lions; hike across active stratovolcanoes; explore evergreen cloud forests; and venture deep into the rainforest.

Ecuador’s historical cities, with their lively markets and colonial architecture, are a real feast for the senses. And there’s always the opportunity for some relaxation here too: Ecuador’s Pacific coast beaches have plenty of soft sands tucked between sleepy fishing villages.

Where to go

Just a two-hour flight from mainland Ecuador, the volcanic Galapagos archipelago is one of the main reasons to visit this South American gem. Here you cruise from island to island, following in Darwin’s footsteps in search of some of the most fascinating wildlife on the planet. Speaking of wildlife, don’t miss a foray into the Amazon Jungle in search of monkeys, jaguars and native birdlife.

In the capital, Quito, you can get immersed in the country’s colonial past, while Banos offers adventurous activities and hiking. You can shop at the vast Otavalo Market – three hours north of Quito and the largest of its kind in South America – or, for high-altitude adventures, summit the mighty Cotopaxi Volcano.

When to go

If it’s sunshine and beaches you’re after, or a Galapagos Islands cruise, we recommend visiting during Ecuador’s rainy season (December to May), as this is when temperatures – both in and out of the water – are at their warmest. The Andes highlands and Quito boast spring-like temperatures year-round, so you can visit at any time.
