Explore: Chile

Stretching down South America’s western coast for 2,670 miles – bordered by Pacific beaches on one side and the drama of the snow-dusted Andes mountain range on the other – Chile is a spectacular sliver of a country.

Holidays to Chile

And Chile’s wildlife is just as varied as its topography: from dapper penguins and mighty Andean condors, to pumas in the Patagonian wilderness. Having been populated since 3,000BC, Chile is rich in history and culture too – with the far-flung Easter Island, historical tombs at the Cementerio General de Santiago, and Valparaiso’s Unesco-listed downtown bursting with myths and legends.

Where to go

If it’s natural landscapes you’re after, head to the Atacama Desert – in the north of the country. Here you can look skyward for some of the best stargazing on the planet, not to mention a collection of technicolour lakes, belching geysers and vibrant wildlife.

The lively capital of Santiago is pretty central, with easy access to the Andes and the wild Pacific coast, while the south promises dramatic topography punctuated by glaciers, fjords, mountains and forests in Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park. And there are adventures to have beyond the mainland too – particularly on the far-flung yet enigmatic Easter Island, best-known for its mysterious stone statues or ‘moai’.

When to go

The best time to visit Chile depends entirely on what you want to do. For the Atacama – the driest desert in the world – you can visit year-round, while Santiago and its surrounding cities and beaches are best experienced in the shoulder seasons (September to November; March to May). For the southern Patagonia region, visit in the summer (November to March).
