Explore: Northern Ireland

Famed for its natural beauty, a tour of Northern Ireland not only reveals stunning landscapes, but also stately houses, picturesque gardens, and historic whiskey distilleries.

Holidays to Northern Ireland

Each of Northern Ireland’s six counties has its own distinguishing features. Look to the apple orchards of County Armagh, the Mourne mountains of County Down – dominated by Slieve Donald – and the lakes of County Fermanagh. For remarkable coastal scenery, County Antrim holds the crown, and Lough Neagh in the centre of the country is the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.

For a culture fix, head to east coast capital Belfast, on the banks of the River Lagan. Here, state-of-the-art museums vie with grand government buildings and a year-round programme of events.

Where to go

Top of the sightseeing list has to be the extraordinary rock formation of The Giant’s Causeway, an area of some 40,000 basalt columns dating back nearly 60 million years. While there, take the opportunity to drive along this spectacular stretch of the Antrim coast for dramatic castle ruins and white-sand beaches.

Another striking landmark is Mussenden Temple at Downhill Demesne, on the rugged north coast. It’s not surprising that the beautiful Slemish Mountain near Ballymena are said to be the legendary home of patron saint, St Patrick.

The Titanic Experience is Belfast’s top attraction, and aptly sited in the shipyard where the ill-fated vessel was built in 1909.

When to go

Notoriously unpredictable but rarely extreme, temperatures remain mild thanks to the North Atlantic Drift. Barely a summer week goes by in Belfast without a music, cultural or literary festival. Major events include The Belsonic Festival (August) and Belfast International Arts Festival (autumn).
