On the southernmost coast, picturesque Algarve resorts come with buzzing harbours, cobbled streets, botanical gardens golden beaches and estuaries which teem with wildlife.

Ideal for a get-up-and-go holiday, activities including boat trips, golf, tennis, horse-riding, mountain-biking are plentiful – and the country’s capital, Lisbon, with its baroque streets and buzzing waterfront is a must for culture vultures who love city breaks. Meanwhile, the less-visited northern region, with its national park, maritime cities and vineyards, makes ideal touring country.

Where to go

A perfect short break destination, historic Lisbon punches above its weight in terms of culture, architecture, cuisine and nightlife. Overlooking the River Tagus, must-see sights include the celebrated Gulbenkian Museum displaying paintings by old masters. Take a ride on the quaint, wooden tram and enjoy the nightlife in the Bairro Alto area.

Lively Porto, Portugal’s second city that gave the country its name, is home to Serralves – a superb contemporary arts museum in beautiful gardens. Plus, less touristy but no less fascinating are the elegant cities of Guimarães, Braga and Sintra.

For the great outdoors, head to Peneda-Gerês, the country’s only National Park – or the Alto Douro wine region with its bucolic river and the Paleolithic rock art of Côa Valley.

When to go

Long hours of sunshine and a balmy climate which holds steady from spring through to autumn makes the Algarve a firm favourite with sun-seekers looking for golden sands and a beach holiday. Even in winter, the temperatures remain pleasant, and it’s worth noting that Lisbon is Europe’s sunniest city. Porto fills with revellers on St John’s Day (June 23).
