Explore: Germany

From the Alps in the south to the Baltic Sea in the north, there are endless reasons to visit Germany.

Holidays to Germany

Not only does Germany have a raft of vibrant cities packed with world-class museums and galleries but a host of small medieval towns and villages with cobbled central squares decked with flowers and narrow streets to explore.

With no fewer than 16 national parks, its varied landscape includes watery tracts such as scenic Lake Constance on its southern borders and Fünfseenland near Munich. In the southwest is the vast and unspoilt Black Forest – and to the east, the Bavarian Forest shared with neighbouring Czech Republic. Meanwhile, the northern coast provides huge sandy beaches and a choice of lively resorts.

Where to go

Spend the weekend in flamboyant Berlin, intellectual Dresden, naval Hamburg, and the cathedral city of Cologne, or take a journey along the Romantic Road to visit the fairytale castles of Rothenburg ob der Tauber or hilltop Neuschwanstein in southwest Bavaria.

The vineyards fed by the Moselle and Rhine Rivers are a draw for gourmet travellers, while the Bavarian resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the foothills of Zugspitze – Germany’s highest mountain – rewards hikers with spectacular scenery. Among the world’s largest parks, and a Unesco World Heritage Site, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe has cascading falls and grand fountains.

When to go

Autumn is an excellent time to visit, not least for Munich’s famous Oktoberfest (which gets going in late September). Leaf colours in the countryside are a sight to behold: the season is known as ‘goldener Oktober’. Summer is inevitably busy but spring is a good option, or hit months of November and December for twinkling Christmas fairs.
