Holidays to France

With a mainland divided into over a dozen regions, each has its own character, traditions and even climate. National parks are a hiker’s delight – from the largest, Vanoise, in the French Alps, to Cévennes in Languedoc-Roussillon.

France is just a short hop across the Channel, but a world away in terms of culture and language. On a Paris city break, the simple pleasures are the greatest: immerse yourself in its street cafes, head to the top of the Eiffel Tower, pay visit the world-famous Palace of Versailles, shop like the rich and famous,  see the Mona Lisa and take in its grand monuments – with top-notch museums and galleries galore.

Where to go

Easy to reach and packed with sights, Northern France offers the pink granite coast of Brittany, the vast beaches of Normandy, and the historic cities of Caen, Rennes and Rouen. Nose around the elegant châteaux in the Loire Valley or sample fine wines in Burgundy. For striking scenery head to the lavender fields of Provence or hike the high mountain trails of the Pyrenees.

Nowhere does glitz and glamour like the Cote d’Azur with its dazzling resorts of Nice, Cannes and St Tropez. Sporty types are well-served in the Alps to the east in summer and winter, while the Atlantic Coast with its campsites and big sandy beaches has long been a favourite destination for families.

When to go

Enjoy the fireworks in Paris on Bastille Day (14 July) and mingle with the glitterati at the Cannes Film Festival (May). The southern city of Avignon hosts a yearly arts festival (July) and the Nice Carnival (February) includes grand parades and street parties. The annual Tour de France (July) attracts keen cyclists from around the world.
