Explore: Croatia

Dubrovnik may be the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, but there’s far more to Croatia than this favourite stop-off for cruise ship itineraries.

Holidays to Croatia

The idyllic rocky Dalmatian and Istrian coastlines are backed by the towering escarpments of the Dinaric Alps. The busy mainland cities of Split and Zagreb contrast with the unspoilt national parks of Krka and Plitvice Lakes. But the biggest draw is Croatia’s vast collection of islands; each has its own distinct character.

Where to go

If you’ve opted for a city break, you’ll probably fly into Dubrovnik or Split, so take a day or two to explore these historic cities on the Dalmation coast – the former with its 13th-century city walls and limestone-paved streets. Take a cable car to Mount Srd to view Dubrovnik’s defensive layout, made famous by Game of Thrones, from a high vantage point. Further north, Split is built around an ancient Roman palace with seafront cafes that are perfect for people watching beside the Adriatic sea.

Choose your island according to taste. The busier spots of Hvar, Korcula, and Brac Island have cosmopolitan resorts with buzzing restaurants and cafes in elegant stone-built houses, dating from former Venetian occupation. For peace and quiet, choose pine-covered and car-free Kolocep, or relaxing Mljet for boat trips to tiny swimming coves.

When to go

Croatia is perfect for a late spring or early autumn break when temperatures are warm but not scorching and resorts are quieter. This is the best time for exploring the national parks too. July and August see plenty of outdoor music festivals in the busier resorts, but remote islands remain chilled-out even in the peak months if you’re looking for a beach holiday.
