If you think you’ve seen all of Europe on summer holidays and city trips, think again: there’s always something new to discover.

Holidays to Europe

As diverse as it is compact (it’s the second-smallest continent on earth), Europe’s countries range in size from tiny Vatican City and Monaco to colossal Russia, which straddles Asia. In terms of language, culture and cuisine there are vast differences too, and landscapes range from the Alpine lakes and mountains of Switzerland, Austria, and northern Italy to the lowlands of Holland and the extraordinary volcanic island of Iceland.

If you think you’ve seen all of Europe on summer holidays and city breaks, think again: there’s always something new to discover

Europe’s world-class southern coasts stretch from the birthplace of Western civilisation, the Greek islands, with its fingers of land reaching into the eastern end of the balmy Mediterranean, to the sandy shores of the Spanish Costa del Sol, including the elegant boot of Italy and the glittering Cote d’Azur of France. While in the north, the North Sea meets the Arctic Ocean as it curls around the majestic fjords of the Scandinavian coast.

It’s criss-crossed with mighty rivers, too – ideal for river cruise holidays. The Volga, Loire, Rhine, and Danube, which journeys 1,700 miles through six countries – from the forests of Germany, through Austria and Eastern Europe, to the Black Sea. Meanwhile, myriad islands pepper Europe’s shores, from the bucolic isles of the southern Aegean to the far-flung western Azores and the remote, icy outcrops of northern Norway.
