Explore: Costa Rica

Sloths, active volcanoes, hot springs, and howler monkeys – Costa Rica holidays are all about nature. In fact, this Central American country may be tiny, but it’s actually one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

Holidays to Costa Rica

To put it into figures, it accounts for just 0.03% of the Earth’s surface, but boasts nearly 6% of the world’s biodiversity.

So it’s little wonder, then, that nature lovers, honeymooners and wildlife seekers alike have all started flocking here. Of course, the laid-back attitude helps or, as the locals call it: pura vida – the pure and simple life.

There are so many ways to holiday here too – by hiring a 4WD and heading out under your own steam, hiring a private driver and staying in luxurious eco-hotels, or taking in all the sights on a group tour.

Where to go

Where to go in Costa Rica largely depends on what you’re travelling for. Wildlife lovers will be drawn to Tortuguero National Park, on the country’s Caribbean Coast, where – if you’re lucky – you can spot green, leatherback and hawksbill turtles nesting and hatching.

Along the Pacific Coast, Manuel Antonio National Park is lauded as one of the best places to spot the elusive sloth, while Corcovado National Park, on the southern Osa Peninsula, is where you can hope to catch a glimpse of toucans and jaguars.

Beach lovers should head for the Pacific Guanacaste region and the Nicoya Peninsula for its white sands, while those seeking some soft adventure can zipline and hike their way around Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud Forest – in the heart of the country.

When to go

Costa Rica’s dry season runs from mid-November to April, making this one of the best times to travel around the country. It is, however, one of the most expensive times to visit so, if you don’t mind a bit of rain, it’s also worth considering the ‘green season’ in May, June and September.

For prime turtle nesting in Tortuguero, plan your holiday for between July and October.
