Explore: St Lucia

St Lucia’s beauty had European powers fighting over it for centuries — ‘Seven times British, seven times French’, as any local will tell you.

Holidays to St Lucia

Now one of the Caribbean’s independent nations, it’s among the friendliest and most peaceful of the islands.

While other Caribbean islands look postcard-ready, with sandy stretches of coast in every direction, St Lucia’s appeal is earthier – the terrain varies so much, you could be in a tropical rainforest one minute and the belly of a volcano the next. The majestic twin peaks of the Pitons crown it all, and your high-rise, winding journeys across the island are soothed by views of untouched greenery.

Nearly all the resorts and attractions are along the west coast (as are the two main cities, French-influenced Soufrière and the more British-feeling capital of Castries) — so if you want to see the island’s wilder side, take a drive along the eastern coast.

Where to go

It’s easy to get started: with English as the official language and cars driving on the left, St Lucia feels familiar and welcoming – making it perfect for rewarding self-drive holidays. Long golden-sand beaches are yours to discover, while the rainforests offer world-class birdwatching and hiking.

The coastline is spellbindingly beautiful if you’re arriving by cruise ship: book a day trip to discover cocoa plantations, historic estates, and views of those mighty Pitons.

When to go

Like most Caribbean islands, mid-December to April is the most popular time to visit. A holiday in May, however, will dodge the high-season prices and hurricane season which begins in June. It may also coincide with the St Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival on Pigeon Island.
