Explore: Dominican Republic

There’s much more to the Dominican Republic than its beautiful beaches: think of this sultry, Spanish-blooded island as Cuba-lite — or an easier, breezier Mexico.

Holidays to the Dominican Republic

In fact, its resort reputation applies only to two tiny pockets near the big airports: Punta Cana (in the south) and Puerto Plata (in the north).

To see La República Dominicana at its best, seek out stylish independently-owned accommodation outside the resorts. It might be a thatched, boho bolthole or a five-star grand design. What they’ll all have in common is a lush jungle backdrop and sandy coves framed by palms.

With 800 miles of coastline, there are more perfect beaches than you could possibly hope to squeeze into a two-week holiday – all with white sands and swaying palm trees

Where to go

With 800 miles of coastline, there are more perfect beaches than you could possibly hope to squeeze into a two-week holiday: for starters, head to Playa Rincón on the Samana Peninsula, Playa Grande (Rio San Juan) or Macao Beach (near Punta Cana) – all with white sands and swaying palm trees.

Seek out local life in Santo Domingo, a mini-Havana with live music in its bars, smooth cigars in its humidors, and a buzz in its cobbled streets that you’d never find in a resort.

When to go

The weather is warm all year round, but for uninterrupted sunshine, visit between December and February. A holiday in February will also coincide with the famous Carnival, a celebration of the Dominican Republic’s independence day. For fewer crowds and cheaper prices, visit a little later between March and May.
