Holidays to Singapore

A charming east-west fusion with futuristic skyscrapers nestled next to Chinese temples, Singapore can be contradictory at times – offering up a mix of Chinese, Indian and Malay influences, with colonial history thrown in. Sip Singapore Slings in the historic Raffles Hotel, feast on fragrant street food in Chinatown and Little India, before taking a gamble on lucky number eight in the glitzy Marina Bay casinos. Singapore is one of Asia’s truly A-list destinations.

Where to go

Compact and bijou, the island-state of Singapore can easily be explored in a few days, but there’s also plenty to keep you occupied for a week or even two.

First on the must-see list is the sprawling Singapore Botanic Gardens. Established in 1859 and now a Unesco World Heritage Site, these lush tropical gardens are the green lungs of the city and offer fantastical treetop swings, vast rubber plantations and the world’s largest orchid collection. Meanwhile, families will love the myriad of wildlife at Singapore Zoo and Night Safari – the world’s first zoo for nocturnal animals – as well as the thrill rides and rollercoasters at Universal Studios.

When to go

Singapore has a tropical climate and is humid all year round. There are two monsoon seasons (May to September and November to March), but showers are short and there’s still plenty of sunshine. September is a popular time to visit, largely thanks to Formula 1’s legendary night race.
