From the chaotic back streets of Mumbai and the enigmatic charms of Jaipur, to the golden beaches of Goa and Kerala, India is a rollercoaster ride for the senses.

Holidays to India

While many come to explore the Golden Triangle – with the lavish Hindu temples of Delhi, Jaipur’s crumbling pastel-hued forts, and the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra – there’s much more to this fascinating country. Go hiking in the national parks and mountains of Ladakh, relax on a leisurely boat cruise down the Ganges River in Varanasi, or get some retail therapy on the bustling street markets of Kolkata. India is a remarkable destination, and your trip and memories of it will stay with you forever.

One-trip wonder? Far from it: your first foray into India will be only the beginning of a love affair – here's our expert guide to planning the perfect trip

Where to go

Fly straight into Delhi and take a few days to acclimatise by ticking off some of the city’s main sights including the Mughal-era Red Fort and the beautiful 17th-century Jama Masjid Mosque. Then venture further south to Rajasthan, to explore the ancient Amer Fort and the pink-hued Haha Mahal Palace, and to see the glorious fortified city of Jaisalmer. Naturally, no trip to India is complete without seeing the inimitable Taj Mahal at dawn, one of the true wonders of the world.

Alternatively, take a big cat safari tour in one of the remote tiger reserves in central India or explore the vibrant bazaars of Mumbai on a rickshaw tour.

When is the best time to visit India?

India is at its best during October and March when high temperatures are a comfortable 20-30C, while in the south – where it’s balmy all year round – the rains of monsoon season from June to September have lessened. In March, the whole country celebrates Holi, one of the most colourful and vibrant festivals in the world.
