Explore: China

From jungle-clad mountains scattered with ancient pagodas, to its forbidden cities and giant pandas China is one of the most diverse and fascinating countries on the planet.

Holidays to China

Some flock to hike through China’s remote corners, past rice paddy terraces and tea plantations, while others come to feast on Peking duck in Beijing, slurp soupy noodles from Shenzhen street hawkers and sample Shanghai‘s dazzling nightlife.

Whether you want to conquer the magnificent Great Wall of China, follow in the footsteps of emperors in the Forbidden City, or come face-to-face with an army of Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, there’s so much of this vast country to explore.

Where to go

Many China tours begin in the capital, Beijing, a sprawling, vibrant city where you can tick off big sites including the magnificent Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, and even see the embalmed body of Chairman Mao. It’s also one of the gateways to China’s biggest attraction, the Great Wall, which runs for 13,000 miles linking mountain peaks like a daisy chain.

Another big draw is Xi’an, home to ancient temples and tombs and, of course, the world-famous Terracotta Army – thousands of clay warriors, each one of them unique. Finally, kick back with a luxury river cruise down the Yangtze River and witness the magnificent Three Gorges.

When to go

China’s climate is diverse as its culture. In the subtropical south it’s hot and humid, while central regions see cool, crisp winters and long, sunny summers. To see it at its best, visit in autumn when leaf colour blazes or early spring when the Chinese New Year celebrations are in full swing.
